HOW THE COUNCIL WORKS

How the Council works
Guildford Borough includes the town itself and a number of surrounding villages. It is divided into 21 areas known as wards, and each ward is represented by one, two, or three Councillors. They stand for election every four years, and receive no salary. The only qualification needed is that they obtain the support of local people to nominate them as a candidate.

It is the Councillors who make the decisions about what should be done and how much should be spent on each particular service. The people who put their decisions into effect are the Council staff.

Guildford Borough Council provides a wide and diverse range of services. No one could be expert across the whole of this range, nor would they have time to give them the attention they need. Therefore the Council operates through a number of committees. For more infromation on the council structure or the composition and purpose of the various committees please take a look at the section on committees

COUNCIL COMMITTEES
Members of the public, particularly those having an interest in matters under discussion, are welcome to attend and, in certain circumstances, speak at meetings of Guildford Borough Council and of the Council's Executive, Policy Panels and other Committees.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

Guildford Borough Council is one of the major employers in the area with a permanent staff of over 1000 full and part time employees. In addition we also have a significant number of opportunities for temporary and casual staff.

By providing the majority of our own direct and support services, the range of employment opportunities is extensive and the benefits, including flexible working hours for a large percentage of staff, are excellent.

In addition to flexible working hours, the large proportion of employees terms and conditions of service are determined locally to ensure that the Council can attract and retain high quality staff.
