WHAT
IS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT |
|
In
1992 the United Nations Earth Summit at Rio de Janerio
established that the only way to reconcile the needs
for future economic and community development with
protection of the environment is by sustainable development.
This is a way of producing a better quality of life
for everyone throughout the world now and for future
generations.
The
international programme supporting sustainable development
is called Agenda 21 (an Agenda for the 21st Century).
At a local level the programme is Local Agenda 21
(LA21).
The
Government has set each local authority a target of
producing their own plan in support of Agenda 21 by
the end of 2000. Guildford's first plan has been designed
as a framework for sustainability for the Borough
Council in all its activities and contains actions
and targets to improve our environmental programme.

GUILDFORD'S
LOCAL AGENDA 21 STRATEGY |
|
Our
plan will help to build sustainable development into
all the Council's activities to improve Guildford for
those who live and work here. There are three main areas
which the document focuses on; the economy, the environment
and strengthening the community. Each of these topics
is broken down further into specific topics such as
energy, transport, community safety and education.

 |
HOW
WILL WE ENSURE OUR ACTIONS ARE ACHIEVED?
|
Wherever
possible targets are being set and will be monitored regularly.
A working group of Council Officers will be established to
ensure that actions listed in the strategy document are being
achieved.
