Schools and the Environment SCHOOLS GRANTS Each year, Guildford Borough Council will be accepting applications for the Schools Grant Scheme. Successful applicants will be given a grant of up to £500 to carry out an environmental/sustainable project. Examples of recent successful grant applications include, a walking bus, environmental garden and a model for alternative technologies.
Schools Grants Scheme 2002 The successful applicants of the 2002 Schools Grant Scheme were announced in April. They were Pirbright County Primary school, Howard of Effingham, Tillingbourne Junior school, St Nicola's school, Priors Field school, Northmead school, Merrow C of E Infant school and Ripley C of E Infant school. Each school was awarded a grant of up to £500 to carry out environmental projects including, a litter reduction scheme, a wetland area, a nature trail and a walking bus scheme. The grants are intended to develop young people's awareness and understanding of the environment while helping the council to protect and enhance the Borough's environment. The grant scheme will be changing slightly in 2002/03 to make it easier for schools to apply. Details of the new grant scheme will be sent out in the autumn term. Environmental Opportunity Year 11s and Sixth formers Do you fancy improving your local community, managing your own project and sharing what you know with others? Would you like to get funding, training and support to do it? The Young People's Trust for the Environment is giving away more than sixty Living for the Future Millennium Awards. Awards are for individuals who would like to do an educational project with an environmental theme. You could make a website, do talks, produce displays, regenerate a community area or make a film. In fact, your ideas are limited only by your imagination. Applicants must be aged 16-23 years. The awards on offer can be as much as £3500 which covers the costs of materials, equipment and training. Award Winners experience an exciting outdoor training programme as part of their Award. By taking part award winners not only get chance to do something worthwhile for the environment but also get the unique opportunity to run their own project and make their own ideas become reality. WWF 'Our World Project' The world summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa is our big chance to set the world on a path to a sustainable future. 'Our World Project', enables your voices to be heard at the next world summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2002 . There are projects for schools and teachers individually. Schools · Schools are invited to submit an application for a grant of £15,000 intended to help schools achieve a makeover with sustainability at its core. The four winning schools (one from each country) will be able to send a pupil (plus a teacher or parent) to play an active role in the next world summit. Teachers · An essay competition with a chance for the winning teacher to attend the world summit. · Runners up prizes - two teachers will win a digital camera for their school · Top essays will be published on line and in the media. Schools must demonstrate links to the curriculum, to local authorities and to the local community. The teachers' challenge must address new and possible future directions in education.
