Guildford Borough Council has 10 units situated across the Borough, totalling some 358 sheltered housing dwellings, of which two schemes have been specifically designed for extra care. Here tenants enjoy the privacy of their own self-contained flat. Within most of the schemes are a hairdressing salon, assisted bathroom, showers, shop and communal lounge/dining room. Other schemes offer individual studio flats or fully self-contained units depending on the age of the establishment. The Warden's role is to be an enabler of services and not one of direct hands-on care, offering support and guidance to residents and relatives. Each scheme is connected to the Emergency Communication System (see Alarm System Service), and is staffed by a Warden. Many schemes within the Borough are widening their role by offering the provision of luncheon clubs and this has proved very popular, especially in the rural areas of the Borough.
